March 21, 2012 . Our meeting topic will be on mid ocean ridge basalts.

  Let Us Know You're Coming!

Our meetings start at 6:00 pm with a social hour, dinner is served at 7:00 pm and the presentation begins at 8:00 pm. Dinner will cost $25.00/person, dinner for students is $5.00; checks preferred. For this month's meeting, reservations should be emailed to John F. O'Neill at jfgoogal@gmail.com, please title as "PGS Dinner Reservation", by noon, Monday, Feb 15th. If you are unable to use email, call (724) 713-3491 and leave your name and number of reservations needed. Meeting will be held at the Foster’s Restaurant, Foster Plaza Building 10, 680 Andersen Dr, Greentree. See map for our meeting place. Suggested attire is business casual. Students and guests are welcome, you need not be a member to attend our meetings and its okay to just drop by for the speaker presentation at 8 pm.

Directions:
From Pittsburgh: Parkway West to Green Tree-Crafton Exit. Bear left at exit and left again onto Mansfield Avenue West. Follow Mansfield West to the 2nd traffic light. Turn right onto Holiday Drive and proceed up the hill to Foster Plaza Building 10.

From Airport and I 79: Parkway West towards Pittsburgh, exit at Green Tree-Mt. Lebanon Exit. Turn left onto Greentree Road, make left at 1st traffic light onto Mansfield Avenue West. Follow Mansfield West to the 2nd traffic light. Turn right onto Holiday Drive and proceed up the hill to Foster Plaza Building 10.

Student Field Workshop to be held Saturday, April 14 on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. Learn the basics of fieldwork and see a drilling, sampling and monitoring well demonstration. Click here for the information flyer and feel free to post the flyer and spread the word.
 
10th Annual Student Night, April 18, 2012

STUDENTS: This is an opportunity for you to compete in student presentations sponsored by the Pittsburgh Geological Society, the Association of Engineering Geologists, and the American Society of Civil Engineers-Geotechnical Division at the 10th Annual Student Night on April 18 at Foster’s Restaurant, #10 Foster Plaza, Greentree. If you have been doing undergraduate or graduate research in any geologically or geotechnically related field, you have the opportunity to show off your work to members of the three societies, and receive some benefits as well.

Abstracts (250 words or less) of research findings should be emailed to patrick.burkhart@sru.edu patrick.burkhart@sru.edu by March 2, 2012 for consideration.

Each society will select one student paper (graduate or undergraduate) for oral presentation. Additional abstracts may be accepted for poster presentations. All presenters will receive certificates of recognition and appreciation, as well as a complimentary dinner. The three oral presenters will each receive awards of $100, while poster presenters will receive $50.

Students: please consider disseminating your research at this auspicious professional venue.

Professors: please pass this information on to your students who are doing research.

He's included useful information on earthquakes in general such the earth's plate motions, Richter scale comparisons, types of waves, etc.
